Ramelteon (CAS: 196597-26-9) was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 22, 2005, then approved by Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) on Apr 16, 2010. It was developed and marketed as Rozerem® by Takeda, can be used to treat insomnia with difficulty falling asleep, and has definite effects on chronic insomnia and short-term insomnia. This product can selectively activate the type 1 and type 2 receptors of melatonin (MT1, MT2), increase slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REW), thereby reducing insomnia. Ramelteamide is the first non-addictive insomnia treatment drug that is not under special control. This product is a melatonin receptor agonist. It has a high affinity with the melatonin MT1 and MT2 receptors, and has a specific and complete agonistic effect on the MT1 and MT2 receptors, but does not interact with the MT3 receptor.
