8-Azaguanine (CAS: 134-58-7) is a purine analogs showing antineoplastic activity by competing with guanine in the metabolism. It functions as an antimetabolite and easily incorporates into ribonucleic acids, interfering with normal biosynthetic pathways, thus inhibiting cellular growth. When incorporated into RNA, it causes translation errors from mRNA to protein. 8-Azaguanine inhibits purine nucleotide biosynthesis. In the treatment of acute leukemia, 8-Azaguanine is used.
